how to be happy and stress free.

I'm not going to have a magic potion or spell or some sort of miracle to make your life perfect and let you bet forever happy. These are just a couple of things you can do to make your day and make you a little happier!

(source:weheartit)

1. Find something that makes you happy and calm - for me, when I listen to music, especially acoustic, I just find my worries simply floating away. For a lot of people, music is very calming but if it's not for you, try anything like meditation, yoga or even art.

2. Have some 'you' time - for a couple of minutes, or even an hour, just spare some time for yourself. Light some candles and do anything you find relaxing - read a book, watch a film or even take a nice warm bubble bath!

3. Smile - it's so simple, just smile. Studies have shown that however you're feeling, if you just smile, you'll feel elevated. Even a small smile can make someone else's day.

4. Go out and socialise - sometimes we just want to be ourselves when we're upset but it's amazing how good company can completely change our mood.

5. Don't lose sleep over it - I know that whenever I'm upset, I always overthink it before I go sleep and I end up hardly getting any sleep because I'm worrying so much! If you are finding it hard to get to sleep, try putting a couple of drops of lavender oil on your pillow case and you will have a lovely nights sleep.

autumn wishlist.

Autumn and spring are definitely my 2 favourite seasons, with winter and summer coming in joint third place. Autumn also has my favourite fashion trends and this season, I have more things I really would like than usual.

(source: weheartit)

1. Bowler hat - I've wanted a bowler hat ever since I've seen ghostparties' blog. She got hers from H&M but since I haven't seen it on their website, I'm considering the topshop or urban outfitters ones. However, they're around £25+ and I can't bring myself to spend that much on a hat, so I'll have to hope someone gifts it to me? ;)

2. Pleather/parka military coat - I have been seeing this everywhere on youtube, literally. I love it so much. I'm not one to follow the hype, like I don't like wearing stuff that everyone else wears but this is a total exception. The topshop one is crazy expensive so I might get the Primark one, so we'll have to see, eh?

3. Pleather circle skirt/shorts - I've really fallen in love with pleather aka the cheaper and vegan/vegetarian alternative to real leather. I think they are pretty versatile and just gorgeous in general.

4. Riding pants - After watching qu33ney's video on youtube of her wearing riding pants, I fell in love. I adore the American Apparel ones but the well they are expensive! Since Harriet got hers from H&M, I was wishing they still sold them! *fingers crossed*

What are your autumn wishes?

I'm going bowling and a restaurant today for my friend, Robin's 16th birthday. I really like how the bright orange clashes with the grey and to obviously not forget my trusty knee high socks, which I'm sure that I've included in ever OOTD. I hope you all have a good day!

september favourites.

(source: weheartit)

I know I probably say this to myself every month of every year, but oh my, September has gone so fast! With only several days left, I thought I better sneak in a September favourites post before I forget. To be completely honest, I only have 1 beauty favourite this month and a couple of random favourites, so I apologise for this being brief!

~ Eau Thermal Avene Skin Recovery Cream - I got a sample of this about a year/two years ago from boots when I spent over £10 or something. When I looked at it, I was so confused by what it meant by 'skin recovery cream' so I just left it in my room and over the year, it worked itself to the back of my drawers. Last year, I found it again and tried it. This is an amazing cream for winter, especially if you have dry skin like me. It keeps it so hydrated but I think it's a bit too heavy and moisturising for summer. I want to buy the full size but I'm not sure I want to spend £12 on only 40ml.

~ Coldplay - I know this is a really random favourite but I am pretty certain I have fallen in love with Coldplay over this month. I used to love their old music, like Yellow, but I kinda forgot about them for a while. When I saw them play at the paralympic closing ceremony (which was awesome) I fell in love with them & their music all over again. I definitely urge you all to listen/buy their new album Mylo Xyloto because it's so good, definitely one of my favourites.

~ Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky - I actually read this book on holiday in August but since the film is coming out on October 3rd (can't wait!) I thought I should read it again, you know, refresh my memory. I have totally fallen in love with the whole book again and I recommend you all read it!

I hope you enjoyed reading this and I'm so sorry there's only 3 but I promise there will be more next month!

I'm off to lunch with my family today and I must say it is pretty cold outside now, so I better ditch my knee high socks for some tights. It's very weirdly cold in London right now, it's like we skipped autumn and are already in winter! I hope you all have a good day x

tips for saving money for gift buying.

Christmas may be 3 months away but I can guarantee that time will fly past! I always try to get Christmas presents a couple of months before Christmas because I hate those mad rushes in shops a couple of weeks before Christmas so it's so hard to find anything and secondly, because some shops make everything crazily expensive during Christmas. It's definitely worth to take advantage of the sales but for things that can't be bought in shops or are very limited, it's best to get it before Christmas.

(Source: weheartit)

1. Use discounts/vouchers - (I did a post on this last week) It's really easy to get hold of vouchers that can be posted/emailed/on websites, etc. Getting a discount on things bought online is a quick and easy way to save money.

2. Buy and sell - selling old presents or things you don't need on eBay, Amazon, Gumtree, etc is a great way to earn money to buy new things.

3. Do your research before you buy - always check for offers or discounts on websites before buying something. Usually products are cheaper on other websites rather than their own, eg. a brand might be cheaper in a drugstore/high street shop rather than the brand's website.

4. Ditch expensive cards for cheaper alternatives - I know that during Christmas/New Year time, I get loads of cards and I give quite a lot too. Since a lot of people will bin the cards next year, why not cut back on the costs and get them cheap at a pound shop or shops like Tesco.

I hope you found this useful! :)

what to wear to a gig/concert.

For me, gigs have been the most enjoyable and most memorable nights of my life. If I'm not at a gig, you'll probably find me watching a gig live on the internet. The atmosphere at gigs are insanely addictive. Not only are you surrounded by people who adore the same singer/band as you, but you're literally seeing the singer/band in the flesh and not just in pictures. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

I've been to quite a few gigs but all of them have been seated, so its definitely not the same as being at a standing gig.

This October, I'll be going to a gig to see Ed Sheeran live. I am so excited since I love him with all my heart ;)

As it may seem, within the first ten minutes of a gig, you'll be drowning in sweat (this sounds absolutely vile, sorry!). So to stop your clothes being drenched in sweat, avoid tight fitting clothes and long sleeves.

So here are my list of must-haves:
~ pair of boots or trainers (remember your feet will be stepped on a lot and you'll be standing up for long so make sure they're comfy)
~ tank/cami/short sleeved top
~ pair of shorts or leggings (jeans are okay but some jeans aren't as easy to move around in)
~ small cross-body bag (don't get a huge rucksack as you'll find yourself being dragged down or even in the worst case, your valuables being stolen. a small bag that you can sling our your shoulder is great to fit in your necessities)
~ a camera or a phone with a camera (no doubt that you'll want to take pictures to cherish the night for years to come. definitely don't bring a professional camera because 1. they are forbidden in most gigs and you'll be asked to leave and 2. it's very likely to get stolen or damaged. just bring a phone with a decent camera and you should be good to go)
~ a cardigan or jumper (you won't need this when you're in the gig but when you leave, it will probably be cold. so instead of freezing to death, bring a cardigan to put on and when the gig starts, chuck it into your bag or tie it around your waist)

I hope you found this useful. Have you been to any gigs and if so, what did you wear?

money saving tips.

There are a lot of ways to save a bit of money here and there. Some of you may call it being 'cheap' or a 'cheapskate' or something but I call it being practical and efficient.

(Source: weheartit)

Here are some nifty ways to save money:
1. Use voucher/discount websites. Here are some good ones that I recommend (I think they are all UK only, sorry!)
buyapowa
(the ones in bold are my favourites)

2. Get brands for cheaper by going to poundshops or cheaper stores.
I recommend PoundLand the most because they're always stocking up on brands like Olay, Garnier, Clearasil and basically a lot of brands you would see on the highstreet/drugstore.
99p stores are also good and really any pound shop in general is good.
athriftymrs always seems to find a lot of cheap makeup in poundland that would cost you more than £5 in a drugstore.

3. Dupes galore.
There are loads of dupes out there for half of the price.
eg. a dupe of the body butter from Body Shop is a body butter you can get from poundland.

I hope you learnt a few tips and tricks from this post!

my current haircare routine.

This is my hair naturally and the curls are a total pain. If any of you are curious, I wash my hair every 3/4 days. I don't use any heat on my hair expect blowdrying my fringe but I let the rest of my hair air dry.
Here is my current haircare routine:

I actually use 3 different shampoos and 2 conditoners. I alternate between these shampoos and conditioners, mainly because I really want to use them all up.

Shampoo:
Tresemme Moisture Rich Shampoo - one of my favourite shampoos, really moisturising.
Dove Damage Repair Shampoo - awesome shampoo, also one of my favs, even if your hair isn't damaged like mine, it makes your hair go super super soft and it smells gorgeous!
Naked Clear Anti-Dandruff Shampoo (hardly use it) - I hardly ever use it and only to keep dandruff at bay. It really does work to keep away dandruff.

Conditioner:
Tresemme Moisture Rich Conditioner - a really good conditioner, not my favourite, its very moisturising but it has a very weird smell?
Dove Damage Repair Conditioner - this is my favourite conditioner in the whole wide world and has a beautiful smell. You need to try this, seriously!

After washing my hair, I towel dry most of it and then put the Boots Almond and Coconut Leave In Conditioner to detangle my hair. I only apply this at the ends of my hair but this has a really horrible smell, not as bad as the smell of garbage or something but it doesn't smell like coconuts or almonds to me. I don't think it detangles my hair very well and I haven't noticed a difference in my hair after using this. However, I bought this ages ago and I really want to finish it so I just use it for the sake of it really.

I then part my hair so I can see my fringe and put some Charles Worthington Frizz Free Serum onto the ends of my fringe and on the ends of my hair. It is a really good serum and I find that it keeps my hair soft after blowdrying my fringe. I also find that it stops my ends being so dry.

That's the end of my haircare routine and I know its not a lot compared to other people's routines but I find that less is more for my hair as it will get greasy, quickly.

things to do in autumn.

(Source: weheartit)

Now autumn is here and I'm sure winter will be quick to follow, we normally cosy up inside and avoid going out. Lucky for you, I've made up a little list of things to do throughout winter and autumn. The great thing is that most of them won't cost you a single penny!

~ When it snows, go to the park and have a snowball fight at night
~ At night, go outside (in your garden or the park, etc) sit down with your friends/family and look up at the stars. To make it even better, drink hot chocolate, tea or whatever hot/cold beverage you like!
~ Lie down in a pile of leaves
~ Stay in at home and watch have a movie marathon
~ Go to a campsite and toast marshmallows around the fire (like in the films haha!) An alternative is to have a picnic
~ When its raining outside or you just want to stay in, find loads of your favourite pictures and make a scrapbook
~ Go to an indoor ice rink
~ And of course, make snowmen and go sledging!

how to keep your hair healthy.

There are a lot of products out there labelled to keep your hair healthy but I've found only a handful of them actually help, so here are two that worked for me:

(Source: weheartit)

~ Coconut Oil - this is my ultimate holy grail haircare product. Always always always buy pure coconut oil from the food aisles and not the haircare aisles. This is because the haircare ones have chemicals added to it which generally, your hair could do without. The pure coconut oil comes in a solid so before you use it, heat it up in the microwave for 30 secs. I put it in my hair for 1 hour before I wash it out and tah dah! Beautiful healthy hair. Another alternative to coconut oil is amla oil mixed with mustard oil!

~ Yogurt and Mustard Oil - this is a great combination for people who have dandruff in their hair. This is actually an ancient family recipe and it has been keeping hair dandruff free for years. You put some greek style or natural set yogurt in a bowl and mix with about 2 tablespoons of mustard oil. Then mix it together, put it on your hair and tie your hair up in a bun or it will ruin your clothes! You might want to put a shower cap over your hair or it may go all over your furniture. I usually do this about once a month and keep it in my hair for around an hour and wash it out as usual.

Do you have any haircare secrets?

wardrobe/closet organisation.

(Source: we heart it)

I think I have a minor case of OCD because I am obsessed with organisation. You can probably tell that since my last post was about school organisation. I love organising my wardrobe/closet because it makes it so so simple to just pull out an outfit.

In my wardrobe, I have to two rails. The first rail is for clothes for special occasions and clothes that I hardly wear. On the second rail, I put clothes that I wear a lot and my school uniform.

I organise each rail by separating them according to their type so I put all the shirts and tops together, all the knitwear together and all the trousers/skirts/shorts together. Then in each category of clothing type, I put it in order of colour. This means from left to right, I put them in rainbow order. For those of you who don't know, it's red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. I put the browns and beige with yellow. I also put the greys and blacks after violet.

This makes it super simple to just pick out clothes in the morning, according to their type and colour!

get organised for school/college/university.

At the beginning of the academic year, most of us are super organised but as it gets closer to the end of the year, we start to become less and less organised.

(Source: we heart it)

Here are some simple ways to stay organised throughout the whole year:
~ use folders and ring binders to file any handouts or worksheets you get from the teacher
~ write in a diary/planner what homework you have, when it is due, etc.
~ at the end of the school day, write out a summary of what you have learnt in a notebook so you can look back on it at revision time (tip: use a notebook with dividers or get separate notebooks for each subject)
~ if you don't understand something, ask the teacher during class or if you're shy, write it down so you don't forget and approach the teacher at the end of class
~ highlight or underline key points in your work, make this more fun by using different colours
~ do extra research after class or read about the next topic you'll be studying, not only does this keep you on top of everything but it impresses your teachers too!

I hope you find these tips useful! Just remember, after all the months of revision, it will always be worth it in the end.

the pressure to be perfect.

Sometimes we try to please everyone, we try so hard to keep everyone else happy but on the way, we forget about our own happiness. For the past few years, since I started high school, I tried to be good enough for everyone, to reach their expectations. I tried to be nice, funny, understanding and everything anyone could want in a friend. I tried to be perfect.

The thing about the concept of perfection is that is based solely on the one persons' view. My idea of perfection will be different compared to someone else's thought of perfection. And that's what struck me hard. I tried to fit everyone's perspective of perfection. When I was with one person, I would be funny and witty. When I was with someone else, I would be caring and understanding. I kept changing myself for everyone else and I began to think to myself, who am I? I had multiple personalities.

Last year, I decided to stop and just be myself. At first, people were kind of confused, thinking I had changed completely over summer. Then pretty much everyone accepted me as I was and I think that was truly amazed. One quote I read a while ago fits this topic quite well, "Those who mind, don't matter. And those who matter, don't mind".

In today's society, we're surrounded by pictures of models and celebrities. They are constantly called perfect or they have the perfect body or hair or smile. Just remember that we blame society but we are society.

I think that perfection is just a state of mind where it's something we always strive for, whether it's the perfect  figure or smile, yet it's something we can never have ourselves. It's always something that someone else has, we are quick to see our own flaws but we are quick to point out good things about other people.

Perfect by Simple Plan really explains how you may not be perfect but you're worth it.

"Nobody's perfect. We're all just one step up from beasts and one step down from the angels" - Jeanette Walls

7 deadly beauty sins tag - skincare version.

I've seen this tag floating around the bloggersphere and youtube and I thought I should give it a go but with a skincare twist since I don't really wear make up!

1. GREED: What is your most inexpensive beauty item? What is your most expensive?

My most inexpensive is probably my mosturiser, Simple Hydrating Light Moisturiser which cost me £1 from the pound shop haha! I make it a general rule that I buy most beauty products from the high street so I don't have anything crazily expensive. It's probably my facial scrub/mask from Garnier Pure range. It only cost about £7 but its the only thing that costs more than what I usually spend.

2. WRATH: What beauty products do you have a love-hate relationship with? What product has been the hardest to get?

I have a love-hate relationship with my Neutrogena pink grapefruit facial scrub because sometimes I feel it helps my skin but sometimes I think it's just a bunch of chemicals that's not helping my skin. I haven't really got a product that's been hard to get since I get most products from high street, nothing is really difficult to find.

3. GLUTTONY: What are your most delicious beauty products?

Definitely my Neutrogena pink grapefruit scrub, oh god, it smells of heaven.

4. SLOTH: What beauty product do you neglect, due to laziness?

Probably my Neutrogena spot stress control cleansing lotion because I can never be bothered to use it.

5. PRIDE: What beauty product gives you the most self confidence?

My Avene mosturiser sample, purely for the fact that it hides most of my spots and blemishes.

6. LUST: What attributes do you find most attractive in the opposite sex?

Humour, definitely but not a mean kind of humour.

7. ENVY: What items would you like to receive as a gift?

Either the Clarisonic Mia or Loverdose by Diesel.

Sunday 2 September 2012

quotes for thought.

It's not really the nature of my blog to write about anything philosophical and if you knew me in real life, you would never think of me as a philosophical thinker or anything but sometimes, in my mind, I have this random moments when I all ever think of why this and why that. I'm a sucker for philosophical quotes, whether they're in books or films or just something you hear on the radio.

One of my all time favourite quotes is from The Vow, a really awesome film that is actually based on a true story and stars the beautiful, not to mention perfect, Channing Tatum!

In the film, Leo (played by Channing Tatum) says, "Life's all about moments, of impact and how they changes our lives forever. But what if one day you could no longer remember any of them? The moment of impact. The moment of impact proves potential for change. Has ripples effects far beyond what we can predict. Sending some particles crashing together. Making them closer than before. While sending others spinning off into great ventures. Landing them where you've never thought you've found them. That's the thing about moments like these. You can't, no matter how hard you try, controlling how it's gonna affect you. You just gotta let the colliding part goes where they may. And wait. For the next collision"

I love that quote but I can never remember it off by heart so I always end up copying and pasting off the internet. However, yesterday, I stumbled across yet another quote, this time it was a comment on a video by TheHappyWallflower. The comment quoted a few sentences from a film called 'The History Boys' (which I now vow to watch): "The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - that you'd thought special, particular to you. And here it is, set down by someone else, a person you've never met, maybe even someone long dead. And it's as if a hand has come out, and taken yours."

That is probably the most accurate depiction of me right now. Last night, I was reading a book by John Green, my favourite author in the world. The book was called Will Grayson, Will Grayson. There was one sentence that really struck me because it is so true. It said "The things that you hope for the most are the things that destroy you in the end".

The thing I adore about John Green is that he manages to write down everything I have ever felt and write it in the most beautiful way. I think the best thing about that quote is that it just radiates truth. For example, in the legendary film, Mean Girls, all Cady wanted was to not be a loner so basically she wanted to be popular. In the end, it ruined her reputation, she lost her friends and well, she ended up to be not so popular.

For anyone who has actually read everything I just wrote, I salute you for having a long attention span and for hopefully not being bored by this. Maybe nobody will read this but I just needed to get this out of my brain.

what's in my school bag?

If you read my last post on my review of my SwankySwans satchel, you hopefully would know that my camera is broken so I can't take a picture but here is one from Amazon:
(Source: Amazon)
In the main compartment:
- school books (my school has a weird thing where you have to bring all your school books from the previous year back on the first day because we don't have our timetable until registration on the first day, crazy I know)
- pencil case, pretty self-explanatory what's in it
- my phone
- lip balm
- tissues
- earphones
- locker/house keys
- purse

In the front pockets:
- geometry set
- calculator
- hand sanitizer
- chewing gum

My school bag is pretty basic, now that I think about it there's nothing special inside it. I hate it when blog posts end in open questions but I would love to know what kind of stuff you carry around in your bag?

Kayla x

swankyswans satchel review.

Sadly, my camera is broken from when I dropped it on holiday, clumsy me :( So I can't take a picture of my actual schoolbag but since I bought it off Amazon, I found a picture of it there.
(Source: Amazon)

This is my bag, I actually got the exact same one in navy blue but its sold out on Amazon so there isn't a picture anymore.

This bag is amazing, literally. Its so spacious, perfect for A4 books and it could fit a few ring binders but not huge ones. The pockets on the front are big enough for calculators or geometry sets. There are also pockets on each side of the bag but I haven't managed to find anything to put there, maybe a water bottle or tissue haha?

I think the faux buckles on the bag are awesome and they are secured by a magnetic clasp. I am slightly worried that they won't last as they aren't very magnetic.

Overall this is an awesome bag and I'm glad I found it. At first, I was dying for a Cath Kidson bag but I couldn't bring myself to spend £60ish on a bag that may or may not last. However, this satchel from SwankySwans (they're on Amazon and eBay but there is a bigger selection on Amazon) is a great alternative. My bag (not the one pictured here) cost about £29 with £4 delivery (pretty pricey!). I must say that the delivery was great and worth it, as it arrived within 2 days rather than they 3-5 days they predicted.

summer to autumn transition pieces.

(Source: We Heart It

There's always that awkward few weeks between the end of summer and beginning of autumn when you don't know if you should wear more or less layers and the weather, that always seems to be changing, doesn't help either. So swap your shorts for jeans, your sandals for boots and your sleeveless tops for some chunky knit cardigans!

~ a pair of boots:
I'm a sucker for any kind of ankle boots, especially these boots from Zara. You can wear any kind of boots, ankle boots or even boots that go higher than your kneecaps!

~ a warm coat:
Warm coats are an essential here in the UK and can be used pretty much all year round. I especially love this  faux fur lined parka from Pull & Bear. The khaki colour means that you can still look trendy and be warm at the same time.

~ a cable knit jumper:

~ a pair of jeans
Jeans are the ultimate staple in any girl's wardrobe, especially skinny jeans but any style of jeans are just as good! This pair from Topshop are super comfortable and are very versatile.

ootd - we're still waiting on the world to change.

shirt: ralph lauren (old)
shorts: debenhams (old)
socks: new look

I'm going to a little meet-up with my friends before school starts (dreading it already!) and we're off to the cinemas to watch Ted, which I'm really looking forward too as the trailer itself looks hilarious! After, we're going out to eat so hopefully this outfit will be able to bear the chilly London weather but I may need to change my socks into some tights, hm ;)
